Laura's Hat

My sister, Laura, brought me this yarn from one of her trips through the Southwest. It's soft. The yardage and fiber content were not listed. I'm guessing that the yarn is mostly wool, if not all wool. It's a single ply, loosely spun.

The notable thing about the hat, though, is the stitch pattern, which is the Navajo Basket pattern from book one of the Barbara Walker Treasuries, modified slightly because slipping a stitch for four rows freaked me out. (I'm ok now. Don't worry.) The other notable thing about the Knitting Fates were smiling. I ran out of brown yarn right there at the top of the last brown row. I ran out of red just as I was doing the last decreases. I still have a small ball of black yarn, which will be useful next time I knit at the movies.

My assumption is that Laura's head is roughly the same size as mine. If it's too small, that's too bad, as there is no more yarn.

Someday I'll get around to writing out the pattern. Someday I won't feel like I'm juggling flaming cats.

The yarn is Navajo Lambswool, which is shorn, spun, and dyed by hand in the Navajo Nation. I bought the yarn (skeins?) at the Hubbell Trading Post (National Historic Site) in northeastern Arizona when I was travelling to meet Steph in Albuquerque, NM. I had spent five days camping through Flagstaff, Navajo National Monument, Monument Valley, and Canyon de Chelly before getting there.
I LOVE my new hat! It's absolutely perfect for wearing around town, during a light hike or when it's a little chilly when I'm camping! If anything, it could be a little longer so it would cover my ears completely, but covering the tops will do! I plan on taking it with me this weekend on my big hike up Mt. San Antionio (Baldy)!
Thanks, Step-on-it!
